Instagram to remove 'like' counts for some users.  Facebook Inc.s Instagram plans to remove the number of "likes" visible on posts for some users in the U.S. to decrease competitive pressure among people on the photo-sharing service. Instagram has been hiding like counts in some markets since April, beginning in Canada, and later expanding to Japan and Brazil. The U.S. is one of Instagrams largest markets with more than 106 million users, according to data analyst EMarketer. "What were hoping to do is depressurize Instagram a little bit, and make it a bit less of a competition," Instagram boss Adam Mosseri told Bloomberg after announcing the new test at a conference in San Francisco sponsored by Wired magazine. "The idea is to try and reduce anxiety and social comparisons, specifically with an eye towards young people." Users will still be able to see the likes they receive on their posts if they want, but those metrics wont be visible ...

Whatsapp Is Reportedly Banning Users WhatsApp is fighting a long battle to make the platform better and more secure for everyone. In the latest bid to ensure compliance and stop wrongdoing, it is reportedly taking the extreme step of actually banning users from across the world for 'suspicious’ group names. Several users complained about the same on Reddit. According to a thread on the platform, a user was banned after he changed a university group name to something that was indicative of child sexual abuse. WhatsApp tracker WABetaInfo was one of the first to identify this.  "It seems like it's easy to be banned from WhatsApp, using a suspicious name as group subject. In this case, the group subject did not reflect with the content of the group (probably it was changed for joking) and the entire group was immediately banned," it tweeted. Other users who reported the ban were involved in dark, edgy humor causing collateral damage. These users have b...

How Nigeria intends to implement 5G network.  Ahead of the 2020 set date for the roll out of 5G networks in Nigeria, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will look at three strategic areas of interest that will be beneficial to the country, cum Africa. These areas of focus include enhanced mobile broadband applications, the low ultra-reliable, low latency applications and the Machine to Machine application. According to NCC, Nigeria and other part of Africa will subscribe quickly to the enhanced mobile broadband application. The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, while responding to questions at the just concluded ITU Telecoms World in Budapest, Hungary, said the reason for this was because African countries are trying to roll out broadband infrastructure for broadband applications. “So this will spur us on to ensure we put in place the necessary infrastructure,” he stressed. Google earth now allows you to create your own tour Google’s adding some new features to Earth, allowing users to create their own comprehensive stories and presentations using Google’s model of the globe. When Google updated Earth in 2017, it added a section to the site called “Voyager,” which offered guided tours of parts of the globe. The Voyager tours were hosted by the likes of BBC Earth and Sesame Street. It was part of a general overhaul to make Earth more useful to students and explorers than it was before. Now Google’s essentially expanding this so that anyone can do the same thing. You put together a story, presentation-style, using Street View pictures, 3D flyovers, text slides, place markers, etc. When completed, the viewer goes on a journey from place to place, following the creator’s story. It feels like there’s a graduate student out there somewhere who’s about to use this to put together a kickass reenactment of Xenophon’s March of the Ten Thousand. It sound...

India Is Creating A National Facial Recognition System Siddhant T. is a lawyer who is so concerned about his privacy that he wanted his name changed for this story. And so, when an airline representative at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi airport suggested he check in with his face for a flight to Bangalore in September, he bristled  —  and then declined. The representative looked confused and called a befuddled supervisor, who repeated what his colleague had said.  just sort of looked at them in disbelief,” said Siddhant, “and then shuffled off immediately to check in an old-fashioned way.” Later that day, he posted a picture of his boarding pass to his Instagram. “I was just told that I could use my face to print [my] boarding pass,” he wrote. “How the f do [they] have my biometric data? Are they permitted to use it for shit like this?” They are.On Sept. 6, New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi airport became the fourth airport in India to test a facial recognition system to let passen...

Twitter's political ad ban raises one big issue Twitter will ban all political advertising, the company’s CEO has announced, in a move that will increase pressure on Facebook over its controversial stance to allow politicians to advertise false statements. The new policy, announced via Jack Dorsey’s Twitter account on Wednesday, will come into effect on 22 November and will apply globally to all electioneering ads, as well as ads related to political issues. The timing means the ban will be in place in time for the UK snap election. Twitter had previously implemented rules and restrictions for political advertising. The announcement comes as Facebook is embroiled in a controversy over its decision to exempt ads by politicians from third-party factchecking and from a policy that bans false statements from paid advertisements. Dorsey explained the motivations behind the change in a lengthy Twitter thread that appeared to include several references and responses to the con...

Facebook testing a meme creating App Facebook’s testing out its latest bizarre spin-off app aimed at recapturing its youthful audience — in this case, a meme creation app called Whale. From what we can tell, the purpose of the app is to make meme creation easier by packaging together stock images and basic photo-editing tools. You can apply filters, crop, add emoji and stickers, and “share to social media and message threads right from the app,” according to the app’s description. The creator of the app is listed as “NPE Team from Facebook.” According to The Information, this is the name of an internal testing group at Facebook called New Product Experimentation. It’s also got two other apps available, called Aux and Bump, both of which appear to be aimed at students. It’s not available to everyone yet — at time of writing, it’s only available in the Canadian App Store. And even if eventually sees wider release, there’s no telling whether or not it’ll last. While Facebook’s...

WhatsApp dark mode is 'about to launch' You may have heard that previous generations of innovators landed on the moon, invented vaccines which saved billions of lives and brought about huge social change by allowing women to control their fertility. Now, of course, the greatest minds of western civilisation are busily working on new app features and we’re glad to report that one of the most anticipated upgrades looks set to launch soon. We’re talking about WhatsApp dark mode – an option that changes everything by turning the app interface dark. You might think this was a tiny, insignificant upgrade which will do nothing but bring gloom to your chats with friends. But it will, erm, help your batteries last a bit longer and give WhatsApp a nice new look. It might even protect you from eyestrain when you gawp at your iPhone whilst laying in a darkened bedroom. WhatsApp has included a new ‘dark wallpaper’ in a beta version of its software, the code detectives at WABetaI...

Whatsapp Releases New Feature.  WhatsApp Is Now Letting Users Know When A Message Has Been Forwarded Too Many Times. The new feature is part of WhatsApp's efforts to curb how misinformation spreads on its platform. In an effort to curb the spread of misinformation on its platform, WhatsApp on Thursday introduced a new feature that makes it easier for users to know when a message they receive has been forwarded multiple times. When a user receives a message that has been forwarded among users more than five times, such as chain messages, it is now labeled with a double-arrow icon. Previously, the messaging app showed a single arrow to indicate a message was forwarded. In addition, if users try to forward a message that has already been forwarded multiple times by other users, WhatsApp will note that the message will be marked as "forwarded many times" before it is sent out. Similarly to all other messages sent on WhatsApp, the number of times a certain mess...

Worlds fastest car unveiled The ‘world’s fastest straight-line car’ has been unveiled in South Africa’s Hakskeenpan desert. The car, which has been developed by the Bloodhound Land Speed Record (BLSR) team, can travel at staggering speeds of over 500 miles/hour, and could break the world land speed record in 2020. It’s powered by a EJ200 Eurofighter Typhoon jet engine and features precision machined solid aluminium wheels, which are designed to withstand the stresses of travelling at supersonic speeds. The BLSR team will put the car through its paces at the Hakskeenpan desert racetrack, before attempting to break the world land speed record next year. One of the key objectives of the tests will be to see how the car behaves when slowing down and stopping, having reached such huge speeds. Mark Chapman, Bloodhound LSR Engineering Director, said: “Newquay was all about getting up to speed and finding out how quickly we could get the engine to full power and accelerate using ma...

Rwanda launches first 'Made in Africa' smartphones Rwanda’s Mara Group launched two smartphones on Monday, describing them as the first “Made in Africa” models and giving a boost to the country’s ambitions to become a regional technology hub. The Mara X and Mara Z will use Google’s Android operating system and cost 175,750 Rwandan francs ($190) and 120,250 Rwandan francs ($130) respectively. They will compete with Samsung, whose cheapest smartphone costs 50,000 Rwandan francs ($54), and non-branded phones at 35,000 Rwandan francs ($37). Mara Group CEO Ashish Thakkar said it was targeting customers willing to pay more for quality. “This is the first smartphone manufacturer in Africa,” Thakkar told Reuters after touring the company alongside Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame. Companies assemble smartphones in Egypt, Ethiopia, Algeria and South Africa, but import the components, he said. “We are actually the first who are doing manufacturing.
